Former MLB pitcher Moyer goes to bat for kids

Jamie Moyer relied on a repertoire of off-speed pitches to win 267 games in 24 big-league seasons before retiring in 2013. His career included a couple of All-Star selections and a World Series championship.
Moyer, now 53 and living in San Diego, spends his life after baseball making pitches of a different kind. He and his wife enlist the support of a foundation they formed in 2000 to comfort children affected by loss and family addiction.
During a recent speaking engagement in Lincoln, Moyer said the satisfaction of helping grieving children exceeds anything he ever experienced on a pitcher’s mound.
“It (baseball) was a great career, a fun career, but what’s really neat is that it also became an opportunity to give back,” Moyer told 260 supporters who gathered at the Country Club of Lincoln for the 11th annual Hope in the Morning breakfast, a benefit for the Mourning Hope Grief Center.
“The cool thing is how good you feel inside when you help a kid who’s dealing with loss.”
