Eluna has been honored with the Addiction Policy Forum’s Focus on Innovation award in recognition of its Camp Mariposa addiction prevention programing.

Washington, D.C. – The Addiction Policy Forum has granted its Focus on Innovation award to Eluna’s Camp Mariposa® program; an addiction prevention and mentoring program for youth impacted by substance abuse in their families.

Eluna’s unique, camp-based mentoring model provides youth ages 9 – 12 impacted by a family member’s addiction with skills to cope and to prevent early substance use. Camp Mariposa fosters long-term connections through specially trained mentors and similarly situated peers to provide support vital to breaking the cycle of addiction in the next generation. Eluna is dedicated to energizing new research and inspiring political advocacy that will lead to higher standards of care and positive outcomes for children impacted by addiction. By raising awareness, Eluna reduces stigmas, improves understanding, and makes healing possible for children in need. At least 8.3 million children in the United States live in a home where at least one family member is in need of treatment for a substance use disorder.

“Substance abuse is a public health crisis devastating families and communities across our country. With Camp Mariposa, Eluna offers a transformational program that teaches children coping skills while providing a healthy outlet where kids can be kids again. We are honored that the Addiction Policy Forum is recognizing Eluna with its Focus on Innovation Award and we look forward to working together to raise awareness of the effects of addiction on young family members and eradicate the stigma and intergenerational cycle of addiction,” stated Mary FitzGerald, CEO of the Eluna.

The mission of the Addiction Policy Forum (APF) is to advocate for a world where fewer lives are lost and help exists for the millions of Americans affected by addiction.  The APF’s goal is to elevate awareness around addiction and shape national policy on addiction to include prevention, treatment, recovery and criminal justice reform. It created the Focus on Innovation award to recognize programs across the country implementing successful strategies to combat addiction.

“Communities are struggling with the opioid epidemic and the thousands of children impacted by addiction in the family. Camp Mariposa is serving these families with evidence-based programs, camps that show kids they are not alone, and services that can help break the cycle of addiction,” stated Jessica Hulsey Nickel, President of Addiction Policy Forum.
