Activity: Forever Blended

Exploring GriefAnticipatory GriefArt Therapy

Objective: When two playdough colors are blended together, it is nearly impossible to separate those two colors. When one color represents the youth and the second represents the person who died, youth can visibly see the forever connection they share and then hold a tangible reminder that the person they are remembering will always be a part of who they are now and who they will forever be.

Instructions:

  • Invite the youth to choose one color of playdough that represents them and a different playdough color that represents the person they are remembering.
  • Ask youth to mix the two colors together. Youth will squish, squeeze, and twist the colors together, remembering their person and the love they share.
  • Once there is a good mix of the two colors, say “Freeze” and instruct them to now separate those two colors. Of course, this is nearly impossible!
  • Reflect together about how this represents their forever connection to the person or people they are remembering.
  • If time allows, ask participants to reflect on ways the person they are remembering lives on in their body, heart, and spirit.

Supplies:

  • Two different colors of playdough for each youth. (mini size works perfectly)
  • Optional: One balloon per youth

Additional Idea: Each participant can now transfer their blended ball of playdough into a balloon to create a stress ball that they can use to remember the connection they share with the person who died. NOTE: Be sure to check for latex allergies.
