Stories from Eluna’s community, content, and more.

Jesse Williams and Dan Kay Join Eluna for Screening of What We Hide

On October 21st, we gathered at Bryn Mawr Film Institute for a special screening of indie drama What We Hide to raise awareness for Eluna’s programs.

As the film’s Community Impact Partner, Eluna was thrilled to share this film with community members and local filmgoers and spread its vital message of how addiction effects children. Through the incredible acting of stars Jesse Williams, Mckenna Grace, and Jojo Regina, What We Hide depicts the hidden story of children whose lives are overturned by the overdose of a parent through sisters Spider and Jessie. Eluna resonates with this story as many of our campers at our addiction prevention and mentoring camp, Camp Mariposa, can relate to the harrowing experience the sisters endure.

Following the film, Jessie Williams, writer/director Dan Kay, and Camp Mariposa Mentor, Gianna Calligy joined moderator and Slate Senior Editor, Sam Adams, for a powerful Community Conversation: Uncovering the Impact of Substance Use on Youth and Families. Jesse and Dan shared their experience making the film as well as how its message resonates with them personally, while Gianna shared how Camp Mariposa campers find strength and hope as they navigate how a loved ones addiction has affected them.

We are very grateful for everyone who attended and supported our vital programs, but the conversation doesn’t end here. 1 in 4 (or 19 million) children live in a home with a parent struggling with addiction (SAMHSA) and 1 in 11 (or over 6 million) children in the U.S. will experience the death of a parent or sibling before the age of 18 (Judi’s House/JAG Institute).
