Eluna’s Expert Voices – Importance of Communication using the Zones of Regulation

Matt from Camp Mariposa Philly and Kelly from Camp Mariposa South Bend talk about how they use the Zones of Regulation as a tool for the 7C of COMMUNICATION. Eluna is proud to partner with the Zones of Regulation to offer this visual framework and curriculum to our camp partners. The curriculum provides an easy way for campers to think and talk about how they feel on the inside and sort these feelings into four colored Zones. Here are some highlights from Matt and Kelly about how they use the zones of regulations at camp and home:

Using Colors to Identify Emotions

“The tool that we use at our camp, the Zones of Regulation, has been really helpful for our kids, especially those on the younger spectrum of age. There is green, yellow, red, blue and they each resonate with a different emotion and feeling.” – Matt, Mentor

Matching Up Different Tools for Each Kid

“We will start to talk about what zone we are in and then they can get to a bucket, maybe the red zone or yellow zone. We have also matched up different tools for each kid to help them get back to the green zone – which is the goal where they are feeling more content.” – Kelly, Mother

Modeling Emotional Regulation

“For me, one way that I go about communicating my feelings is when I start getting agitated, taking a step back and thinking about it. Exactly what am I feeling in the first place?” – Matt, Mentor
