Many of us have been taught that being tough on kids who are experimenting or using substances is the most effective way to make change. However, this situation calls for support, listening, and loving reminders. Let them know that you are available as soon as they are ready to talk. Carla Castro-Soto, MS, a helpline specialist with Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, explains why tough love might not work.
