Tips & Scripts for Supporting Youth and Families Navigating a Substance-Related Loss
Developed collaboratively by the Eluna Resource Center and SAFE Project, this new tip sheet offers support professionals, educators, and caregivers practical and compassionate language when supporting grieving families after a substance-related loss.
Inside, you’ll find ready-to-use scripts for reducing blame and shame, validating complex emotions, using person-first language around addiction, and honoring the whole person behind the loss. You will also find guidance on what to avoid saying and why. It’s designed to be a quick, real-world reference for anyone showing up for a child, teen, or family as they navigate this type of loss.
This resource is also a reflection of what’s possible when organizations come together around shared values. Eluna and SAFE Project both believe that no one should have to navigate substance-related loss alone and that belief extends to how we do this work, too. We’re proud of this joint initiative and grateful for SAFE Project’s expertise, care, and collaborative spirit in bringing this tool to life.
